LASIK
LASIK
For years it has been possible to regain clear eyesight to 20/20 vision through laser vision correction. The most common laser vision correction procedure performed today is LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis). Hundreds of thousands of people have undergone LASIK and many notice very good vision the day after their surgery. Since LASIK began, it has moved beyond the one-size-fits-all surgery with the advent of new technology and, since no two eyes are the same, this is a good thing.
LASIK Procedure
The first thing to do is determine if you are a candidate for LASIK. You will undergo a series of tests and be given a free LASIK evaluation by one of our doctors. Once it has been determined that you are a candidate, your ophthalmologist will have you follow certain guidelines prior to your LASIK surgery. The actual LASIK surgery process takes a very short time, and you will return home the same day.
Anesthetic eye drops are applied to numb the area of your eyes that will be operated on. Using a device called a microkeratome or IntraLase, your ophthalmologist creates a flap on the outermost part of the eye called the epithelium.
When the cornea is exposed underneath, it is reshaped using an excimer laser. The laser will use the “map” that was created during your pre-op appointments. Once the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is gently repositioned. There is no need for stitches since the epithelium will heal itself.
The actual surgery can take as little as 15 minutes to complete.
LASIK Recovery
Your recovery from LASIK surgery should not involve very much discomfort. You will be given eye drops for moistening, as well as anti-inflammatory and antibiotic purposes. You should also wear dark sunglasses until the light sensitivity passes.
Though you may notice clear vision right away, others may take a little longer. It will take several months before you have completely healed. You will return to your eye doctor for follow up appointments to see how well you are healing and seeing.
