Wyoming Health Insurance

In the past year, 86% of Wyoming residents had health insurance coverage across the state. Despite still having a high percentage, the rate of Insured residents has increased tremendously over the past two years. Now, 14% of residents lack health insurance and are currently unprotected. Wyoming’s Insurance Department and Department of Health need to work together to ensure that the rate continues to rise in the near future.

One of the key factors that can help improve the percentage of health insurance coverage across the state a change is the amount of Health Insurance being offered by employers across the state. The percentage of employers offering health benefits to employees is the lowest in the US (with only 38.6% of employers offering health Insurance plans), and has consistently lowered for the past five years. Still, over 85% of workers take the Health Insurance plans offered by their employers, one of the highest percentages in the nation. If the percentage of employers offering insurance could rise, the overall percentage will most likely rise as well.

One of the things this state needs to work on is their low rate of primary care physicians. With only 90.1 physicians per 100,000 residents, this could mean that overall quality of the health care provided is jeopardized by the big amount of work the primary care physicians need to do, as they have to reach more people than the national average. The percentage of Wyoming residents capable of getting medical care when needed could also rise, since it’s currently at 86.9%. Federally Qualified Health Centers help serve patients under the 200% FPL, and are currently serving 15% of these type of patients in Wyoming.

Health Information

In 2014 the United Health Foundation ranked Wyoming as the 25th healthiest state in America, a steep decline from the state’s 2008 ranking (14th).

What caused the slip in Wyoming resident healthiness? Occupational fatalities are extremely high, as well as low birthweight and not having enough primary care doctors to serve residents through the vast state. The strengths of a low crime rate, low childhood poverty and extremely low air pollution were not enough to keep the state out of the 20s rankings.
